Ken, thanks for your comment. I think you’re right.
If there is low trust, a bad relationship or bad intentions, this question can take on an entirely different meaning – such as, as you point out, a “gotcha,” attempt to make the other person look wrong or bad, or even humiliation. People can use this behavior to get into one upsmanship (or one upswomanship in our more gender diverse times).
And if the issue is this fundamental then we need to back way up from the higher-order communication I was writing about that elicits motivation and investment, and get into damage control, stopping the bleeding and so on.
This work is much more basic, and really, really important. Some people are ready for it and others will do anything to avoid it. It almost always involves profound personal change.
Finally, I wasn’t entirely sure I knew what you meant when you wrote “And, no, putting “good” ideas in your staffs’ mouths is not the same thing.” Taking a guess/interpretation here, If it means the supervisor has an idea and manipulates staff to also come up with that, then I can’t support it. Any clarification would be much appreciated, and again, thanks for writing.

Great advice when done right. But, these four simple yet powerful words could backfire if there is no trust already developed between the two people. When this is the case, the query may come across as a condescension or, even worse, an attempt to make the respondent look like a fool. And, no, putting "good" ideas in your staffs' mouths is not the same thing.
